How Wall Street Devours Music | Andrew deWaard

Thursday, March 20, 2025 | 3:30 p.m.
Studio 2-7
FAB 2-7, Fine Arts Building, 海角社区 Campus

Join Brian Fauteux in a conversation with Andrew deWaard (University of California, San Diego) about Derivative Media: How Wall Street Devours Culture (UC Press, 2024, available ). In this book, deWaard shows how the financial sector is dismantling the creative capacity of the music industries by upwardly redistributing wealth, consolidating corporate media, harming creative labor, and restricting our collective media culture. Samples, interpolations, covers, lyrical product placements, songs that remake old songs—does it feel like everything new in music is just derivative of something old? From hedge funds to hip hop, private equity to platformed playola, deWaard connects the dots between Wall Street and our crumbling music culture.

There is no charge to attend. Reception to follow (海角社区 faculty, staff, students and invited guests).

This talk will be live-streamed as part of the Questions about Music Colloquium Series. For more information, email: quamusic@ualberta.ca
