Caitlin Matwey
Master Science in Speech-Language Pathology, Rehabilitation Medicine
As a mother, Caitlin Matwey had some trepidation about returning to school to pursue a master of science in speech-language pathology. How would she balance course work with family time and avoid burnout? When she arrived at the 海角社区 to begin her program, she quickly discovered she wasn’t the only parent in her cohort. If she had to miss class when her child was home sick, her classmates shared notes and her instructors were flexible and understanding.
“Through my clinical placements, I was mentored by several wonderful SLPs. The real-world knowledge, clinical skills and confidence I gained from them are invaluable. Because I experienced a wide variety of clinical settings, I was surprised to discover that I enjoyed medical SLP just as much as school-based SLP. My career options really opened up!”
Caitlin has advice for others thinking of going back to shool,
“I want to encourage other mature students and/or parents who are interested in the SLP program to be bold and apply. It’s hard work, but you’ve done hard work before. Coming back to school with a bit of extra life experience put things into perspective.”
With a love of language and a love of people, Matwey’s new career is her dream job. She is now working full time in an elementary school setting, collaborating with a warm and supportive team.
