Marlena (she/her) is in her third year of English and History major in the Faculty of Arts. Originally from Vancouver, Marlena joined the 海角社区 from B.C. last year; however, her family is originally from Germany. She plans to study in the After Degree Education program to become a teacher once she completes her BA. Outside of school, she is a busy bee dedicating her time to volunteering and work. Marlena escapes the buzz by taking time to read, listen to music, walk her three dogs, watch movies and discover Edmonton’s cafe scene. She prefers Rutherford South for its quiet atmosphere and historical architecture.

When I first transferred to North Campus, I found myself scratching my head, wondering where I could find the best cup of coffee. Now that I’ve been attending for a while, here are my recommendations for coffee and tea spots:

  • SUB food court - main floor of SUB
    • Monday - Friday: 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.
    • Saturday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The Daily Grind is a fantastic option for students in search of quality coffee and a laid-back environment to recharge between classes. Located conveniently in SUB, The Daily Grind serves up a variety of freshly brewed coffee, espresso drinks and delicious baked goods, making it one of my favourite spots. I especially enjoy their refreshing iced matcha latte. For anyone who appreciates good coffee and a welcoming vibe, The Daily Grind is a must-visit spot on North Campus.

Remedy

  • Central Academic Building (CAB)

Remedy, located on the bottom floor of CAB, is a unique and inviting choice for students looking for a mix of bold flavours and a cozy atmosphere. Known for its chai and diverse lattes, Remedy offers a refreshing alternative to typical coffee or tea options. Their selection includes vegan, gluten-free and vegetarian options, making it inclusive for those with dietary restrictions. Remedy is a standout on campus, ideal for anyone craving something a little different with a dash of spice and warmth.

Tea & Coffee Company

  • HUB Mall

If you're looking for a coffee shop that offers endless customizations and treats to satisfy every craving, you must visit the Tea and Coffee Company! With an incredibly large selection of flavours to enhance your drink, there's something for every palate. Pair your drink with their delicious food options, ranging from hearty bagels to fresh pastries like croissants and muffins. For those with a sweet tooth, they also offer candy cups brimming with delights, perfect as a standalone treat or as a quick study snack.

Hello My Friend Cafe

  • Law Centre

Hello My Friend Cafe is a must-visit! Conveniently located across from Student Services in the David R. Percy Student Lounge on the main floor of the 海角社区 Law building, this cozy cafe offers a perfect space to grab a coffee and unwind between classes. Known for its welcoming atmosphere, Hello My Friend Cafe provides high-quality coffee, teas and light snacks, making it a favourite among students and staff alike.

Starbucks

  • Cameron Library - 11231 Saskatchewan Drive, Edmonton, Alberta, T6G 2J8
  • Edmonton Clinic Health Academy (ECHA) - 11405 87 Ave Nw, Edmonton, Alberta, T6G 1C9
  • Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS) - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T6G 2E9

The Starbucks cafes on campus are  convenient spots for a quick caffeine boost. The central locations, especially the one near the main quad in the ECHA building, make it easy to grab a drink or snack on the go, while the welcoming atmosphere provides a comfortable space for studying or catching up with friends. The menu offers a wide range of options, especially regarding different types of milks and seasonal favourites. My personal fall favorite is the pumpkin cream cold brew that perfectly gets me in the autumn spirit. Whether you are preparing for exams or just need a break, Starbucks is a reliable and familiar choice for a satisfying pick-me-up.

Tim Hortons

  • Central Academic Building (CAB)

The Canadian classic is a go-to spot for students seeking affordable food and beverages between classes. Known for its delicious donuts (my favourite being the strawberry jelly!) Tim Hortons offers a range of options perfect for a quick breakfast, lunch or snack. Its location in CAB makes it convenient access for me to quickly grab a treat before class without having to venture far.

Whether you’re rushing between classes, catching up with friends or simply wanting to take a relaxing moment to yourself, these coffee and tea spots provide warmth and comfort, the perfect essentials for thriving in the Edmonton winters.
