Finding funds to carry out research is already difficult, but appropriately managing those funds in accordance with all the rules is its own challenge. One of the ways the Research Partner Network is striving to support researchers and administrators is by providing education and training. Read below for details including schedules and registration information.

Research Administration Education Series

These presentations are offered throughout the year online and in hybrid formats. Most presentations will be a total of one hour, including a combination of content and time for questions about the presentation content or anything else we might be able to help with. Currently we are offering the following: 

Series 1: Research Funding
Topic + Learning Objectives Schedule + Registration
Session 1: Finding and Applying for Funding (Audience: Mostly Researchers)
  • Find funding opportunity information
  • Determine eligibility to apply to a particular funding opportunity
  • Understand why research funding proposals must be reviewed and approved by the University
  • Learn to submit a funding proposal for review and approval

 

Session 2: Finalizing Funding (Audience: Researchers and Administrators)
  • Learn the steps involved in finalizing funding
  • Understand required documentation for funding approval
  • Learn how to obtain animal, human, biohazard, and stem cell certifications

 

 

Session 3: Project Types (Audience: Mostly Administrators)
  • Learn the difference between a cash-based project and a budget-based project
  • Develop a basic understanding of different Fund types
  • Understand the purpose and characteristics of:
    • A general research project
    • A conference project
    • A research donation project

Session 5: Subgrants and Service Agreements (Audience: Researchers and Administrators)
  • Learn the difference between subgrants and service agreements
  • Learn to request and receive (incoming and outgoing) subgrants and service agreements
Session 6: Close Out (Audience: Researchers and Administrators)
  • Learn sponsor requirements to close a project
  • Understand activities required to close a research project, focusing on financial and administrative closure
Series 2 : Research Administration Policies, Procedures, and Systems
Topic + Learning Objectives Schedule + Registration
Session 1: Navigating Researcher Home Page & eTRAC (Audience: Researchers and Administrators)
  • Learn to navigate Researcher Home Page (RHP) and eTRAC (UofA online PeopleSoft tools). 
  • Find or retrieve information in RHP and eTRAC
  • Understand the information on RHP and eTRAC 
  • Learn to use these tools to track, manage and reconcile grants

 


Session 2: Tri-Agency Guide to Financial Administration (TAGFA) (Audience: Researchers and Administrators)
  • Understand what constitutes eligible and ineligible expenses
  • Learn to use the Tri-Agency Guide on Financial Administration 
  • Find the eligibility of expenditure information
  • Learn how institutional policies complement legislated requirements of the Tri-Agency policies and other agencies

 

Session 3: Eligibility to Apply for and Hold Research Funding (Audience: Researchers and Administrators)
  • Understand how to apply the UAPPOL policy to determine whether or not one can apply for research funding

 


Research Administration Pop-ups 

These are travelling in-person drop-in Q&A sessions with members of the Research Partner Network and other support units.  They are opportunities to ask any research administration-related question and to mingle with your colleagues.  We welcome researchers and administrators.  No registration is required.
