Community Recreation: Access
The 海角社区, through its Campus & Community Recreation program, provides facilities and activities to enhance the experiences of students, staff and community members. Students, staff and community members can train alongside an accredited guide at the gym, learn how to dance ballet or just swim a few laps Certain programs are aimed at giving specific populations free access to facilities and programs. The 海角社区 works with KidsSport Edmonton to provide children from disadvantaged families opportunities to enter our programs. We also work with the Edmonton community foundation to support a camps program, and we collaborate with USchool to support sport and recreation activities for children from designated schools."
Heroes for Health
The Heroes for Health grant provides up to $5,000 to support staff, students and faculty who contribute to a culture of wellness at the 海角社区. Recipients have promoted social connections, provided mental health workshops, offered students healthy snacks and set up spaces for students to destress.
Mental Health Supports for Students and Staff
The 海角社区 provides students and staff access to mental health supports.
Mental Health Supports for Students include community supports, peer support programs and mental wellness programs. WellTrack is a free online self-help program available to all 海角社区 students who want to learn more about coping with stress, anxiety and depression.
Mental Health Supports for Staff include the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), which offers a wide range of professional mental health counselling and family mediation services.
Sexual Assault Centre
The 海角社区 Sexual Assault Centre provides drop-in crisis intervention support to survivors of sexual violence and their supporters, as well as comprehensive educational workshops for the campus community. All services are free and are available to people of all genders, sexualities and backgrounds.
The Coming Together Project
A partnership between the 海角社区 Faculty of Nursing and the University of Ghana School of Nursing, the Coming Together Project supports future nursing leaders with the knowledge and leadership skills needed to address significant maternal newborn-child health issues in Ghana.
The Landing is a Students’ Union service offering support for gender and sexual diversity. The service runs a drop-in space in the Students’ Union Building for community-building activities, one-on-one support, mentorship, referrals, access to a resource library and advocacy for the safety and acceptance of LGBTQ2S+ individuals.
The Steadward Centre for Personal & Physical Achievement
The Steadward Centre actively supports inclusion and independence for children, youth and adults living with impairments through programming, knowledge-sharing, research, education and collaboration with local, national and international organizations. The centre serves more than 1,000 children and adults annually and trains more than 250 students. In 2016, the centre moved into a 17,000 ft2 dedicated facility that includes a multi-purpose fitness studio, children’s activity room and an assessment room.
University Health Centre
The University Health Centre offers medical services to all staff, students and family members of students. The centre is welcoming to all and provides family physicians, sexual health services, transgender healthcare, mental health support, nutrition consultations and more. Services are available online and in person.
Outreach and Community Health
As Alberta’s leading higher education institution and health research hub, the 海角社区 is dedicated to improving health outcomes for both the university community and the City of Edmonton. To achieve this, the university implements outreach programs focused on health and well-being, including nutrition, family planning, and exercise. Learn more here.
Key initiatives include the for pre-clerkship medical students, which are based on five themes:, international health,, and. These electives emphasize social accountability, allowing students to engage with diverse community groups - often disadvantaged people and refugees - living in the city’s core.
Additionally, the , in partnership with and 海角社区’s Department of Family Medicine, is a unique, free program which supports families to “re-learn healthy living” in their communities, and encourages families and community members to pursue healthier lifestyles through four main areas: nutrition, physical activity, mental health and social connection.
