Programs + Registration

The Steadward Centre has four main program areas

Adult Fitness and Recreation (AFR), Athlete Development for Para Sport, Free2BMe, and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

Adult Fitness and Recreation (AFR)

Adult Fitness and Recreation is the largest program area at The Steadward Centre. Participants work towards a range of exercise goals, from wellness to functional to performance goals. There are offerings that provide program design, 1:1 training sessions, group fitness, and general access to the gym space.  The range of ages is equally broad, with some participants as young as 16 years old to some that identify as senior citizens.

Athlete Development for Para Sport

The Athlete Development for Para Sport program offers a range of opportunities for athletes to engage in Para Sport, from participation to performance. Under the umbrella of the Steadward Bears, athletes in Para Swimming and Para Athletics train within our programs and have the option to compete in integrated events in the community. In addition to sport specific training and competition, Athlete Development for Para Sport also offers strength & conditioning programs. Athletes are provided with individualized training plans to support them to meet their goals in sport. With a focus on both athletic development and performance, these programs support athletes along their sport pathway.

Free2BMe - Kids & Teens

Free2BMe is all about the kids and the teens! Aiming to promote physical literacy (physical, psychological, social, cognitive) this program area facilitates everything from play-based movement to introductory fitness movements and routines. We support participants in developing skills and knowledge towards active lifestyles while building choice and independence in a fun, social environment. This is done through 1:1 and group options.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

The Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) program area is designed for individuals who have paralyzed muscles that they are not able to exercise on their own. By placing electrodes on the surface of the skin, FES uses electrical currents to activate the muscle. This leads to the muscles performing functional movements that enable participants to use specialized equipment such as an FES bike. Essentially, the FES program area provides people with paralyzed muscles with a way to take part in regular physical activity with those specific muscles in their body.  FES also includes general access to the gym space.

The Steadward Centre FES Exercise Program offers two forms of FES-assisted physical activity: FES Leg Cycling and FES Arm Cycling.  Programs exist within The Steadward Centre, Saville Community Sports Centre, the Don Wheaton YMCA and the Castle Downs YMCA.
