Marc Mayer, a former director of the National Gallery of Canada, has been appointed as a member of the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honours. Also named as an officer of the order is longtime Edmonton artist and educator (and Art & Design Department emeritus) Walter Jule.

Beautiful brain: exhibit illuminates the human connections behind neuroscience
Art & Design professors Gillian Harvey and Maril猫ne Oliver were instrumental in the creation of Connections: Bringing Neuroscience and Art Together, a luminous art exhibit of 70 multimedia pieces and a few poems that has been on display at the Friends of University Hospital鈥檚 McMullen Gallery over the summer and is now available online and as a book.

Using non-linear storytelling, Callihoo Ligtvoet (2020 BFA in Art & Design and 2022 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Emerging Artist Award recipient) tells stories about growing up with her moshom on scrip land.
With bold and assertive paintings, Ally McIntyre (2013 Painting and Sculpture grad and 2022 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Emerging Artist Award recipient) explores the effect of art on viewers and the meaning of art to the artist themselves.
When thinking of museums one may consider mainstream, urban institutions to hold authority on what museums are and what they contain. Lianne McTavish is a 海角社区 professor of history of art, design, and visual culture, whose new book 鈥 Voluntary Detours: Small Town and Rural Museums in Alberta seeks to subvert that idea.

An airport hangar in Edmonton has been designated a historic resource by city council, and will now be refurbished into a mixed-use space. The proposal to restore the building and create a mixed-use space was presented to council in February 2021 by Tim Antoniuk (Associate Professor, Design Studies) .
McTavish explores what constitutes a museum, how they promote settler narratives, even the simple act of visiting an off-the-beaten-path rural museum.
While 'a tension' invites viewers to examine trauma in their home spaces, 'PATTERN 2451' asks viewers what is valuable. To wrap up the 2021 鈥 22 season in the Fine Arts Building (FAB) Gallery, Emily Hayes鈥檚 a tension and Heather Savard鈥檚 PATTERN 2451 explore the different ways that families hand down trauma and perceptions of value.

Buddhist art exhibit gives students hands-on experience with museum work

Meet April, Gallery Manager in the Department of Fine Arts, Faculty of Arts.
Two members of the UAlberta Art & Design community are on this year's Long List for the Eldon and Anne Foote Art Prize. Tammy Salzl is a member of Academic Teaching Staff in painting, and Blair Brennan served the department as Exhibitions & Gallery Manager from 1987鈥2018.
Through his work, Garneau hopes that his viewers come to understand that humans have a lot more in common than we think and that communication and connection should not be prevented by what we see of another person. His work Cowries, as well as one of his 2021 untitled pieces, have been added to the 海角社区鈥檚 galleries.
Edmonton-born Stephanie Patsula graduated with an MFA from the 海角社区 in 2020, finding in her studies that she needed to follow her artistic urges wherever they led her.
