Scholarships, Awards + Assistance

A select number of graduate research assistantships (RAs) and teaching assistantships (TAs) are available throughout the academic year.
- RAs: Faculty members recruit for these positions and funding is provided directly to students.
- TAs: Instructors may recruit students or choose to advertise TA positions through the School’s 4U@SPH e-newsletter.
Students may be eligible for awards in several areas of competition. Eligibility requirements, nominations, deadlines and application processes vary. Learn more about department awards and other funding opportunities with FGPS.
Each department sets its own internal deadline for receipt of General Awards applications and students are encouraged to apply well in advance.The university has two top-up awards provided to master's and doctoral students who receive eligible major scholarships. Learn more.
- Walter H. Johns Graduate Fellowship — may be given to students registered full-time in a graduate degree program who hold a Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master's (CGS-M).
- President's Doctoral Prize of Distinction - may be given to students registered full-time in a doctoral degree program who have won one of the eligible major doctoral-level scholarships.
Fellowships, scholarships and awards are available from several outside agencies:
- - provides fellowships for master's and doctoral students studying psychology as a social science.
- - provides support to students pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in a health-related field.
- - allocated as full-time studentships to allow for full-time research training in basic biomedical, health or mental health sciences.
- Queen Elizabeth II Scholarships - awarded to master’s and doctoral students each year to students in the School of Public Health.
Agencies that fund major awards have strict deadlines for submitting applications. In addition, the School of Public Health has an for reviewing applications before they are submitted to external agencies.
